Colonel Hans-Christian Hettfleisch is Branch Head CBRN Defence in the Ministry of Defence, Germany. He also serves as Branch Chief of the Directorate-General for Forces Policy of Federal Ministry of Defence since 2014 and Chief of Staff Refugee Relief Coordination Staff (RRCS) in Berlin since 2015.
He joined the Bundeswehr in 1975 2nd/NBC Defence Demonstration Battalion 220. In 1979 he was appointed Platoon Leader 2nd/NBC Defence Battalion 110 in Emden, while also obtaining his graduate degree in Educational Sciences from the Bundeswehr University Hamburg. He later joined courses in multiple military institutions, such as Bundeswehr Command and Staff College in Hamburg, the Defence Academy in Stockholm and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), which led him to become Chief Lecturer and Head of the Personality Development Division Bundeswehr Command and Staff College between 2009 and 2011.
From 1993 to 1995 he served as an Assistant Branch Chief for Federal Ministry of Defence (Fü S III 4) and, after being appointed in 1995 as Commander NBC Defence Demonstration Battalion 210, he became Defence Attaché, German Embassy in Stockholm between 2001 and 2004. The following year he was assigned Assistant Chief of Staff G3 at the Military District Command I in Kiel and, in 2008, as a Commander at the Land Command Schleswig-Holstein.
In 2011, he joined the NBC Defence and Self-Protection School as Deputy Commandant first and in 2012 as Director of the CBRN Defence Corps and Commandant. Between 2013 and 2014, he was appointed Commandant of the CBRN Defence, Safety and Environmental Protection School in Sonthofen.
